The Lady Wildcats traveled down to Statesboro to play in a tournament against Bulloch Academy and Frederica Academy. They came out on top in both of them. Defeating two AAA schools when we are a single A school is one thing but when one of them (Bulloch Academy) is back to back state champions, well that’s another. On a side note in the 2nd game against Frederica two starters Sydney Wells and Josie Wessel had to come home for another school activity and the lady Cats still won by 12 points.
In game one the Lady Cats defeated the defending AAA State Champions in double overtime 75-72. The Lady cats fell behind 17-11 in the first period only to bonce back and bring the score back to 2 point game at half time. Bulloch Academy is blessed with tall and athletic girls who score lots of points. However, the lady’s never gave in and continued to battle. Turnovers plagued the lady cats all night but they were able to keep scoring and keep the game close and at the end that was enough. In the 3rd period the lady’s scored 16 to 13 for Bulloch to make the score 42-41 Crisp Academy but in the 4th the Lady Gators put up 1 more point than the Cats 16-15 and into overtime they went. Each team posted 8 points each and on to double overtime they headed. In the final overtime the battling lady Wildcats score 10 to 7 over Bulloch and secured the first of two wins. Sydney Wells led the charge in this game scoring 33 points. Also adding to the total was Sidney Folsom and Parker Krause both with 14 points each. “The girls never should any signs of quitting they played very hard all night,” said Gina Mitchell Head Basketball Coach for the Lady Cats.
In game two action the Lady Cats would have to take on another AAA school in the form of the Frederica Lady Knights of St. Simons Island. To add to the drama they did so without leading scorer Sydney Wells and another starter Josie Wessel. The Lady’s won the contest anyway by a score of 44-32. After falling behind 6-4 in the first period the Cats would go on a 15 to 2 romp and go into halftime up 19-8.. The lady’s never looked back and continued to pour it on in the second half out pacing the Lady Knights 25-24 in the second half to win 44-32. “We definitely played better defense in the second game especially without two starters,” said Coach Mitchell. The offense was led by Mary Claire McGarr and Sidney Folsom who both pumped in 14 and 11 points respectively to lead the offense.
