CORDELE — Here it is the middle of summer vacation, and many area children probably are trying to find ways to occupy themselves until the school bells ring again.

Many of these kids will waste away their days in front of the computer or a video game. Others will make permanent grooves in the couches that they sit on for hours and hours of television viewing.

Some young people are going to or have already come back from sports camps, church camps, or maybe even 4-H camps. Beginning on Monday, July 7 the Crisp Area Arts Alliance will be sponsoring a camp for young people who want to nurture their artistic ability.

This camp will be conducted from 1-5 p.m. each day at the CAAA, 701 E. 17th Ave. for students who either are entering or leaving 4th and 5th grade.

“Each day of the camp we will be focusing on a different artistic medium,” says Sunny Lee, executive director of the CAAA. Those mediums include (1) pens, pencils, lines and value; (2) charcoal and pastel, contour lines and blending; (3) watercolor and various techniques use in working with watercolor; (4) color mixing- how to mix your own colors.

On the last day, the kids will get to work with clay. There will also be a music lesson each day with Laura Stephens.

The camp is free to all those wishing to attend. The amount of time spent at the camp depends solely on the participant.

“Kids do not have to be here the full time,” says Lee. “They can stop in at any time during camp hours.”

Lee also offers an art class for home schooled children that meets every Tuesday at 1 p.m. She works with the school system to provide various art activities and sets schedules for performers to go out to the schools.

“Last year I worked mostly with kindergarten students,” Lee said. “I look forward to seeing which grade I will be working with this coming school year.”
