VIENNA - Besides voting in the statewide primaries on July 15, voters here also will choose a mayor that day. Qualifying for that post ended last week with three candidates in the race.
Former Mayor Willie Davis faces opposition from Emerson Lundy Sr. and Mike Roper. Neither Lundy nor Roper has held elective office in Vienna.
Davis was defeated last November by a local minister, Lanier Roberts who resigned from the position less than a month after taking office on Jan. 1.
City officials, upon the advice of their legal counsel, delayed another election until it could coincide with the July 15 primaries. In the meantime, Mayor Pro Tem Eddie Daniels has been the acting mayor.
Davis has a number of years experience on the City Council in addition to 20 plus years as mayor.
Lundy and his wife own and operate an eating establishment in town. Roper is the local Georgia Power office manager.
