CORDELE — A man who stopped at a local convenience store to get something to drink got a surprise when he came out and found his vehicle gone.

He was even more surprised to learn that his stolen vehicle was involved a wreck just a few minutes after it was taken.

Pvt. David Haas of the Cordele Police Department responded to Jubilee Enterprises located at 601 E. Eighth Ave. shortly after 8 p.m. Friday in reference to the stolen vehicle. While en route, Haas was notified by 911 dispatchers of a wreck at Sixth Avenue and Pecan Street involving one vehicle.

Haas met with the victim at the convenience store and escorted him to the scene of the wreck.

The man told the officer that he had stopped at the store and parked his vehicle on the west side with the keys still inside. He went inside to get a drink and when he came out, discovered his vehicle was gone.

When the officer arrived at the scene of the wreck, he found the stolen vehicle and met with several residents in the area who said they had observed a black male jump from the vehicle after the wreck and run north on Pecan Street.

The vehicle was towed, however, the suspect was not located.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the police department at 276-2921.
