CORDELE — Cordele police are searching for a suspect wanted in connection with an early morning shooting that left one person with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday, Cordele police officers Pfc. Jesse Barfield, Pvt. Bruce Gourley and Pvt. David Haas responded to the 600 block of West 23rd Ave. in reference to a shooting.
On arrival, they made contact with a female suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to her left thigh. Crisp County EMS arrived and transported the victim to Crisp Regional Hospital for treatment.
Officers spoke with one witness who said she was outside with some friends when the suspect, who is the father of her unborn child, came out of the apartment, slapped her and told her to get inside.
She said that’s when the victim and another person tried to intervene.
Haas interviewed the victim who backed up the account given by the witness, saying she had attempted to keep the suspect off the pregnant woman. That’s when the victim said the suspect pulled a gun from his pants and struck her in the left cheek. She said after two failed attempts to fire his gun, it finally worked and she was shot in the leg.
A third witness said he and the victim attempted to break up the altercation between the suspect and his girlfriend and was knocked to the ground. He also told police that the suspect pointed the gun at his chest and attempted to fire several shots without success.
The case was turned over to Det. Jeremy Taylor for further investigation.
After an initial evaluation at the local emergency room, the victim was transported to Tift Regional Medical Center in stable condition.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the police department at 276-2921.
