CORDELE — With several months of vacation staring them in the face, local youths will be looking for exciting summer activities.
Such an event is the 2008 Cordele Youth Summer Institute scheduled for July 16-27.
Brought to the community through a collaboration of K&A Brown Professional Services Corporation, ICB Productions Inc., The Unity House Community Foundation, and the Crisp County School System, the 12-day long institute will seek to develop character through the performing arts and will include activities such as dance, drama, music, poetry and drumming.
These interactive activities are designed to enhance personal character and reinforce values of caring, sharing, loving, trust, honor and respect.
“This summer institute, with its character development focus, will improve students’ self concepts, promote conflict resolution skills and celebration relationships and community-building toward the promise of a Cordele Renaissance,” said Janet Clark-Tisdol, event contact.
Youth in grades 6-12 are invited to participate, and the first 150 applicants will be accepted. Cost of the Institute is $60, but through the generosity of local individuals and businesses, scholarships will be available to young people who demonstrate financial need.
At the conclusion of the Institute, participants will present a program of creative and artful expressions through arts, crafts and drama.
Certified teachers and artists will serve as instructors for the Institute. One of those is Luqman M.A. Rahman, a Cordele native who became interested in drumming at the early age of five. By age seven, he had been recruited as a drummer for the A.S. Clark High School band.
Rahman has worked with mentally and physically challenged students in the Crisp County public school system. He is founder of the Ancestor’s Day Festivities of Cordele where special emphasis is placed on drumming as an African ritual.
More information is available locally by contacting Priscilla Rahman at 271-8618, Audrey Hollingsworth at 273-5519 or Ms. Clark-Tisdol at 322-6635.
