CORDELE — Members of the city commission here learned during Tuesday’s regular meeting that wells used by the municipality have fallen significantly since springtime.


City water levels down

CORDELE — Members of the city commission here learned during Tuesday’s regular meeting that wells used by the municipality have fallen significantly since springtime.

City Manager Jean Burnette told commissioners that not every well level has dropped, but the cumulative level of all city wells has dipped a total of 10 feet.

Commissioner Jimmy Black asked that citizens be reminded of the water restrictions in place due to drought conditions prevalent in the area.

City residents with even-numbered street addresses are permitted to use water outdoors on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from midnight to 10 a.m. Residents with odd-numbered street addresses are free to use water outdoors on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays during the same times. No watering is permitted on Fridays.

Burnette said the water restrictions are in line with state guidelines.

In other city business:

• Commission Chairman Zack Wade appointed, with the approval of the full commission, a special committee to study expansion of the city’s water and sewage system.

• The commission agreed unanimously to apply for two separate grants of $500,000 to be used to widen Frontage Road at Perimeter Park.

• Burnette reported that total SPLOST revenues for the county during the month of April were down. April collections totaled $326,297.60 (with $166,192.49 going to city coffers) compared to March SPLOST revenues of $403,942.76 (with $206,663.89 going to the city).

• The commission unanimously approved a package beer and wine sales application from Sunset Food Mart on 503A West 24th Avenue.

• The commission scheduled a work session on the FY2008-09 budget for Tuesday, July 8 at 6:30 p.m.

• Burnette told commissioners she had promoted Debbie Wright to director of utilities control and treatment. Commissioners expressed their gratitude to Wright for her diligence and congratulated her on her promotion.
