CORDELE - Drivers in Crisp, Dooly and Wilcox Counties had a relatively safe Independence Day weekend on area highways.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety reported 2,293 crashes on Georgia highways resulting in 20 fatalities and 848 injuries. The number of fatalities was down from 2006, when 30 were recorded during the same weekend.

There were no fatalities or serious injuries reported in the tri-county area over the 78 hour holiday weekend. The Fourth of July weekend officially began at 6 p.m.Thursday and ended midnight Sunday.

Crisp County Sheriff Donnie Haralson said his department’s primary activity for the weekend was providing traffic control for the fireworks display at the Georgia Veteran’s Memorial State Park Friday night.

The CCSO worked two accidents on private property and turned four accidents over to other agencies.

According to Cordele Police Department Staff Sgt. Gordon Easom, the CPD responded to two accidents on local roads.

Saturday, officers were called to a collision at the intersection of 8th Street and 24th Avenue. One person complained of injuries but was not transported to the hospital. Officers also responded to an accident on 16th Avenue on Sunday.

According to a representative from the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office no reports of accidents on Wilcox County roads were received.

Easom commented on the low amount of accidents worked by saying, “we were lucky this weekend.”
