VIENNA — An 18 year old Vienna man has been charged with burglary and criminal trespass following a Tuesday morning burglary at Coley’s Gin and Fertilizer on Union St. here.

Police Chief Jamey Reed said Christopher Williams was booked into the Dooly County Justice Center as a result of the charges against him.

Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Police Lt. Cozie Ray was dispatched to the business location in response to an activated alarm at the main office.

Enroute to the business, he observed a black male on foot near the intersection of Pine and Eighth Streets, several blocks north of Coley’s Gin. Ray identified the male as Williams who lived on Gregory St.

The officer continued on to the business where he found signs of forced entry. Reed said there was a broken window on the front door and the eastside window had been shatterred. The rear door to the office also was opened.

The business owner was notified, and the scene was processed for evidence.

Ray attempted to make contact with Williams at that time, but was unsuccessful. On Wednesday morning, Sept. 23, Reed said he found Williams and conducted an interview.

During the interrogation process, Reed said Williams admitted that he broke into the business. He allegedly provided details about the crime.

As a result of the interview, property that had been taken from the business was recovered in a nearby trash can.

“During Lt. Ray’s response to the alarm call, he was very attentive to his surroundings,” Reed said. “Taking into consideration the time of day and the rainy conditions, Lt. Ray made a good decision to stop and identify the male in the vicinity of the business which ultimately led to the case being solved in such a timely fashion,” the chief added.
