Crisp students learn G.R.E.A.T.

CORDELE — Students in the sixth grade at Crisp County Middle School soon will be learning potentially life- saving information.

Through a thirteen-week school curriculum, students will learn the truth about gangs and why they should stay away from gangs and gang related activities.

Sgt. Dedra Davis is the instructor for the G.R.E.A.T. Program, which stands for Gang Resistance Education and Training.

She will be spending 30-45 minutes a week at CCMS working with the students. The program is a gang prevention curriculum that teaches students important skills to aid them in avoiding gangs, drug abuse, violence, and crime.

All students have received a letter to give to their parents complete with information about the program and its purpose.

That purpose is to help students develop skills and practice behaviors that will assist them in avoiding destructive habits.

During the program, the students will work with Sgt. Davis to learn not just the truth about gangs and where that lifestyle leads, but also about Roles in their community, how to resolve conflicts and how to make better decisions. Once the students have completed the course a graduation ceremony will be held for the students.
