Dooly Commission meets

VIENNA — Dooly County commissioners here handled an unusually short agenda Thursday morning at their regular meeting. Many items on agenda were for the information of board members.

They received a proposal for the purchase of a new ambulance for the EMS. After some deliberation, Board members voted unanimously not to approve a purchase order right now for the ambulance. They said they thought it would be best to wait until after the first of the year to commit any funds for purchases.

Still under consideration is the matter of a food service contract for the Dooly County Justice Center in Pinehurst. Commissioners have received proposals on the matter, but to date the state has not given a final budget for the board to review. County Administrator Steve Sanders advised commissioners that a decision needed to be made by the next board meeting.

Board members may reconsider an earlier decision to continue maintaining the right of way on Christmas Drive. The board had denied a request to abandon the road, but since that time a cell phone tower has been constructed on a portion of the land with the guide wire anchor sitting virtually in the middle of the right of way.

It is policy that no structures interfere with the right of way, but the guide wire cannot be moved without the entire tower being moved. Sanders advised commissioners that if they want to pursue the matter, their attorney would need to be consulted.

In other business:

• Board members decided to request an extra $1,000 a month besides the regular $2,400 the county charges the City of Byromville until that city pays the past due amount it owes for garbage service.

• Commissioners voted to approve a new checking account for the Flint Humane Society to handle grant funds received by the organization from the USDA.

• The City of Unadilla has scheduled its Christmas parade for Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 at 11 a.m. and has asked that those willing to participate RSVP. Lineup will be on New Street, near the library in Unadilla.

The next meeting of the Dooly County Commissoners is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009 at the Dooly County Economic Development Training Center.
