KCB begins new recycling program

Cordele — Keep Crisp Beautiful is now collecting broken down cardboard, old magazines and newspapers in two bins behind the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce in the drive-thru area at 502 S. 2nd St.

These bins have been generously donated to the organization by Advanced Disposal.

Catherine Mays, KCB director says, “through the simple act of recycling and buying recycled products, consumers can create the momentum that builds materials markets and fills the supply chain of recycled (raw) materials that can help fuel our economy.”

Interesting facts:

• Cardboard is used to ship 90 percent of all products in the U.S.

• Recycled cardboard only takes 75 percent of the energy needed to make new cardboard and lessens the emission of sulfur dioxide that is produced when making pulp from wood trees.

• Recycling 1 ton of cardboard saves 9 cubic yards of landfill space and 46 gallons of oil.

• Recycled magazines help to make newspaper, tissue, writing paper and paperboard.

• Recycled paper saves 60 percent of the energy needed to make new paper.

• Every ton of paper recycled saves more than 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.
