Local Harveys Supermarket undergoing changes

Cordele —  Harveys is in the process of conducting a gradual markdown of items it offers for sale in preparation for a conversion that will lead to a five-day closing of all departments except the pharmacy.

Brad Westenfeld, who will continue to serve as store manager, said prices in the meat and produce sections of the store were cut in half starting this past Wednesday. Prices in all departments will be slashed even deeper — 75 percent off — beginning today.

When the store temporarily closes at 1 p.m. Saturday, conversion will officially begin on all departments other than the pharmacy which will maintain its regular hours of 9 a.m.-7 p.m. from Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and closed all day on Sunday.

Westenfeld said the reason for the shutdown is to clear out existing private brand products and to re-set and re-stock new brands such as Clear Value, Top Care and Chek soft drinks.

“During a five-day shutdown period that will end when we re-open at 7 a.m. on Friday, May 23, front-end registers will be replaced and the store will be re-set with hundreds of new items,” said Westenfeld who noted store hours will be 7 a.m.-10 p.m. seven days a week.

“I’ve been here seven years and I’m extremely excited about this conversion as with it we’ll be offering our customers new promotions such as fuel perks in which savings can be realized at specified local gas stations.

“We’ll also be continuing our Wednesday ‘Super Saver’ items and in addition will be offering  senior citizens discounts tentatively scheduled for Tuesdays.

“Everything in the store will be brightly lit and easily accessible as for the convenience of our customers nothing in the store is undergoing a re-location. All items will remain in the area they’ve been.”

During the transition, Westenfeld said customers may come by the store to acquire the new Harveys rewards program card. Once business as usual resumes, the same friendly employees plus possibly a few new ones will be on hand to greet and serve patrons.

While the store will maintain the Harveys name, it is actually owned by Bi-Lo Holdings which in May, 2013, purchased the chain from Food Lion which 10-11 years ago had bought it from founder Joe Harvey. Bi-Lo also acquired Winn Dixie some four years ago.
