Family loses everything in Wednesday fire

Cordele — A local family lost all its possessions when its residence was destroyed by fire Wednesday morning.

Crisp County Fire and Rescue received a call at 9:05 a.m. to respond to a mobile home fire on McLeod Road in the southernmost part of the county.

Firefighters arrived on the scene just 10 minutes later and found themselves battling heavy, cold winds to extinguish the blaze which had already engulfed 80% of the dwelling.

“We had four pumpers and one tanker on the scene,” said CCFR Chief Ray Lunsford. “The wind was blowing at about 25-35 mph which made extinguishing the blaze increasingly difficult.

“ When the fire stopped, the wind kept causing the fire to start back up. We called in volunteers to assist and shuttled water from Arabi. Total, it took around 12,000 gallons to extinguish the blaze. The home was a complete loss.”

Jennifer Kennedy and Daron Martin were sleeping in the home when the fire began but were able to escape through a window and were not injured.

According to reports, the four children who also lived in the home had already gone to school. According to Lunsford they were able to save a purse in the home as well as four cars that were near the structure.

Lunsford said firemen have some theories about what caused the blaze but will not have any definitive answers until the investigation is complete.

Deputies with the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office along with Crisp EMS also responded to the scene. CCFR remained on the scene until shortly after noon.

The American Red Cross (ARC) has been called in to assist the family. According to volunteer Jack Windham, the ARC has placed the family in a local hotel and provided funds for immediate needs.
