‘Swinging’ week for PASS

Rochelle — Mallard Point Golf Pro, Joe Willis spent Monday, Jan. 28 instructing students in the Patriot Academy for Student Success in the basics of golf.

He demonstrated the proper grip, stance, approach and swing. Students had the opportunity to practice skills introduced through games and activities.

For many children, this was their first introduction to the game of golf, and it piqued their interest in the sport.  The lesson concluded with a putting contest that was fun and enjoyable.

Mr. Willis has offered a future field trip to the golf course. Students will be working toward earning this trip with perfect attendance and good behavior.

Parents of students who are enrolled in PASS were invited to a family engagement session featuring Brent Gibbs, a nutritionist from the South Central Health District.

He presented the new “My Plate” model for nutritional guidelines in planning healthy meals and snacks. Also he interacted with students and parents in a food game to place foods in the proper food groups.

Due to the rising rates of childhood obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and other related illnesses, he encouraged families to plan more nutritious meals and snacks and be more active.

Peggy Harris who works with the Wilcox Elementary cafeteria prepared a wholesome and delicious spaghetti meal. She provided recipes and nutritional information for the spaghetti, whole wheat rolls, salad with low fat dressing and homemade granola.

Throughout the evening, door prizes were awarded and at the conclusion a drawing was held for a $50 gift certificate to Snipes Fine Foods.
