Clerk shot in store robbery

Cordele — A local convenience store clerk is recovering after being wounded during an armed robbery early Monday night.

According to reports from the Cordele Police Department, three black males dressed in all black entered Cordele Food Mart at around 9 p.m. A male and female clerk were on duty at the 316 East 24th Avenue store.

Owner Nick Patel spoke with Dispatch reporters this morning and identified the clerk shot as Rohit Rathod. Patel said the second employee, Jaguruti Patel, who is 8-months pregnant, was shoved to the floor by the suspects, but was doing OK.

“The circumstances, to me, were similar to the robbery at U.S. Discount Store,” said Patel. “The suspects came in and shot first. I am very concerned about what the police are doing to catch these criminals. I want the department to do more for crime prevention. There are a lot of kids that come into this store and I am so  glad no one else was here.

“I have been here for 16 years and have never seen this stuff. Things have to change or its going to be a war everywhere.”

Patel says he is waiting to speak with his employees to determine if anything was taken during the robbery. He is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the robbers.

Detective Andrew Roufs with the CPD is in charge of the investigation. More details will be released as they are made available.
