Dooly Chamber holds annual banquet

Cape Insurance named Biz of Year

Vienna — The Dooly County Chamber kicked off their new year with their annual dinner meeting and banquet held Thursday night at the Vienna First Baptist Church.

2013 Chairman of the Board, Marlene Kimball, welcomed guests and called the meeting to order. Members of the Dooly County High School Future Business Leaders of America led the assembly in reciting the pledge of allegiance. Emberato Colbert, performed the National Anthem. Attendees enjoyed a seafood buffet courtesy of Sister’s Home Cooking.

Following dinner the STAR students and teachers were recognized. Dooly County High School, Senior Wessley Sutton, received the honor for DCHS. He named Ms. Deborah Heckwolf has his STAR Teacher who was also recognized. Darrian Marie Bailey, a senior at Fullington Academy was recognized as the school’s STAR Student. She chose Ronnie Roberts as her STAR teacher and he was recognized as well. Bailey was also named the system-wide STAR Student.

Several awards were also given to governmental agencies, businesses workers and volunteers who work diligently to support the chamber.

Governmental appreciation awards were given to the Dooly County Commissioners, Vienna City Council and Unadilla City Council. The Big Pig Jig Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Mike Roper for his years of service to the Big Pig Jig planning committee. Chamber Director Rhonda Lamb-Heath presented Roper with his award in honor of his final year on that committee.

“I would like to thank the committee and volunteer staff for all their hard work,” said Roper. “I will miss it and I had a lot of fun. I appreciate all the support. I love Dooly County.”

Kimball presented the Chairman’s Award to Larista Thompson of Vienna Main Street. She described Thompson as one who always goes above and beyond to do what she can to lend a hand where it is needed. Dooly County Commissioner Eugene Cason was presented the Director’s Award by Rhonda Lamb-Heath.

The final award of the evening was the Business of the Year which was voted on by the public through the chamber. Long time business, Cape Insurance, was the recipient of that honor. Ronnie and Sandra Cape accepted the award thanking the community for their continued support of their agency.

Chairman Marlene Kimball was presented with a golden gavel for her service to the chamber in 2013 by Heath and Thompson.

Kimball introduced Deborah Delk as the keynote speaker for the evening. The Army Veteran, turned comedian and motivational speaker, entertained the crowd with a number of colorful stories. Her comedic antecdotes captivated the assembly and kept them laughing till the very end.

Afterwards winners of the silent auction were announced by Kimball who then adjourned the meeting.
