Cordele — A Florida woman who died in a crash on I-75 about noon today has been identified as Marilyn Wilson, age unknown. Her husband also suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Macon Medical Center's trauma unit.
Sgt. Garrett Fiveash with the Georgia State Patrol Post in Cordele said Mrs. Wilson was driving. A witness said she was traveling northbound in the center lane when her van veered to the right side of the road and into the ditch where it struck a utility pole with such force that the pole broke off at the base.
There were no skid marks and apparently no attempt to apply brakes, according to Fiveash. He conjectures Mrs. Wilson either fell asleep or some medical condition caused unconsciousness causing her to leave the roadway.
The wreck occurred near the bottom of the Exit 104 ramp. Both the vehicle and pole came to rest in the grassy area between the ramp and I-75, so interstate traffic was not impeded as emergency personnel worked the scene.
