Man sentenced

Abbeville — ABBEVILLE – Blake Howard of Abbeville has been sentenced to 10 years with one to serve in prison and the remainder on probation in connection with the Oct. 2, 2011 death of another Abbeville man, Darrell Alexander.

Originally charged with murder and aggravated assault, Howard pled guilty to a reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter during the most recent term of Wilcox Superior Court.

District Attorney Denise Fachini said an investigation into the incident that led to Alexander’s death revealed that several people had been sitting around a fire in his backyard drinking, and a fight ensued.

While Howard claimed that he could not recall what happened, both he and Alexander appeared to have been in a fight. Fachini says she does not think Howard intended to kill Alexander, but the victim had a history of heart trouble, and he died from blunt force injuries to his head and torso.

There were witnesses to the incident, but they all disappeared, according to the district attorney, and family members of Alexander said they did not see what happened, although they were inside the home at the time of the fight.

In addition to prison and probation, Howard also was ordered to receive treatment for alcohol and drug abuse, Fachini said.
