CAMILLA — Crisp Academy’s Baby Wildcats turned in contrasting performances in a Thursday jayvee doubleheader vs. Westwood and thus had to settle for a split.
After a somewhat dismal showing in an 8-0 first-game loss, coach Stacy Bryan’s squad came back to play well in a 9-5 nightcap triumph.
“Mama said there’d be days like this and, boy, after that first game I believe her,” said Bryan whose team was held to a lone hit by Chip Posey in the lidlifter.
“We made 15 errors and our pitchers (Nick Culpepper and Davis Adkins) weren’t as sharp as I’ve seen them. They weren’t all that bad, though, as they only gave up five hits while striking out seven and walking two.
“We looked a lot more like ourselves in the second game as we played good defense and got good pitching and timely hitting.”
Rich Fallaw, Cullen Brooks and Rush Brown shared the mound chores in the nightcap. They combined to spin a two-hitter during which they struck out seven and walked four.
The offensive leaders were Jake Smith and Corey Stewart with three hits each and Posey with two.
Now 4-2 on the season, the Crisp jayvees won’t play again until a March 31 home game vs. Sherwood.
