VIENNA — When it went up against Dooly County on Wednesday, Region 2-A Division A leader Turner County didn’t need the weird-hop, last-inning single it took for them to get past Wilcox High 6-5 on Tuesday.
The homestanding Bobcats simply gave the Rebels all the help they needed both in the field and at the plate to record a 12-1 victory in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run mercy rule.
“I’ve never seen anything like it in my life,” Dooly coach Quinnen Peavy said in thinking back to the multitude of errors his team committed in losing to the Rebels and dipping to 4-8 overall, 0-4 in sub-region play.
“They had a few hits for sure, but a lot of the scoring damage they did was due to our problems in catching and throwing the baseball as we made a ton of errors.
“As the result, they gradually pulled away from us, scoring 2-3 runs in just about every inning of play. Overall, I’d say at least half of their runs — maybe even more — were unearned.
“It didn’t help matters either that we were held hitless all day by their starting pitcher (Jeremy Stevenson) who went four innings and the Wheeler kid that came on to work the fifth.
“On a positive note, though, I really thought we got the best combined pitching performance we have all year as the two guys we used (Kalep Hendrix started and Alex Fountain finished) only walked one batter between them.”
Hendrix was actually knocked out of the game in the third inning when a line drive shot off the bat of a Turner County player struck him on the kneecap and sent him hobbling off the field.
“We just didn’t give either Kalep or Alex much help defensively or offensively as the final score was somewhat misleading,” said Peavy whose Bobcats will now be idle until a 5 p.m. Tuesday home game vs. Wilcox County.
