ELLAVILLE — Region 2-A coaches met recently to select the top players from schools in the league and in doing so honored several members of the Wilcox and Dooly County squads.
Coach George Kennedy’s Lady Patriots, who went 16-8, had first-team selections in pitcher Jenna Kennedy and infielder Heather Tripp, second-team picks in infielder Heather Watson and outfielder Michaela Dennard and an honorable mention choice infielder Rachel Barwick.
“We’re proud of all our girls for the recognition they were given by coaches in our region,” Kennedy said. “They were all very deserving of the honors accorded them.”
Coach Minnie Harper’s Lady Bobcats, who wound up 2-10, had a first-team pick in infielder Tylicia Sanders and second-team choices in infielder Jackeria Sanders, pitcher Kenisha Kellogg and catcher Carneisha Glover.
In addition, infielder Tekkeria Merrell and outfielders Raven Barron, Ayanna Wilson, Shoshona Davis, Tayla Taylor and Miranda Burke were recognized as honorable mention selections upon nomination by their coach.
“We didn’t do very well team-wise so it’s good to see our girls at least get individual recognition for their efforts,” said Harper who was unable to provide statistics for her nominees.
Schley County swept the top individual honors, with third baseman Ansley Phillips named Player of the Year, Caitlyn Bass chosen Pitcher of the Year and Wilcox County native Brandy Brown Conner selected Coach of the Year.
