Williamson paces Pro Challenge field in 'Thanksving Showdown at local speedway

Special to Dispatch

CORDELE — Powder Springs driver Brandon Williamson dominated the Pro Challenge features on Watermelon Capital Speedway’s “Thanksgiving Showdown” card held last Saturday night at the three-eighths mile oval.

Competing against cars representing all four regions of the Pro Challenge series, Williams first set the fastest qualifying time before a roll of the dies moved him to the fifth starting spot for the first of two 40-lap features. By lap eight, Williamson had forged ahead to stay.

In the second 40-lapper, Williamspn again started fifth as the results of a dice roll. This time, it only took him seven laps to move to the front of the pack for good.

Jarrett Snowden, the pole starter in the first feature, had his hands full holding off old-timers Jonathon Chandler and Kyle Mitchell. Bringing back days of the past, they raced Snowden hard and took over the lead spots.

Mechanical issues later took Chandler out of the race and moved Mitchell to the rear giving Snowden a second place finish in the first feature behind Williamson.

John Morgan Tullis started on the pole for the second feature with Tim Forbes outside. The drop of the green made for side-by-side racing as Tullis and Forbes fought hard for the lead until lap 7. That’s when Williamson and Heavner managed to drop to the bottom of Tullis, forcing Forbes to back off the throttle and give room. This made for a caution free 40-lap event but not without hard racing taking place behind Williamson, Heavner and Forbes.

Results of the local competition held on the program were:

Bandoleros — Woodrow Mullis, Hoboken, and Joey Padgett, Tallahassee.

Claimers — Ben Massingille, Centerville; Wesley Burke, Cordele; Jonathan Johnson, Gordy; Michael Emerson, Warwick; Travis Harper, Cordele, and Lance Spurling, Cordele.

Mini-Stock — Wesley Burke, Cordele; Banks Perdue, Cordele; Zeb Johnston, Sylvester; Jake Roberts, Sylvester; David Bailey, no home town listed; Tom Atkinson, Warwick; Cliff Hines, Vienna; Rod Perdue, Arabi; Drew Marchant, Tifton, and Michael Simpson, Sylvester.
