Instead of notching Region 1-AAAA semifinal wins they hoped to used as springboards for second region titles within the last three years, Crisp County High’s basketball teams tasted bitter defeat Thursday.
Coach Barrett Wilkes’ second-seeded, foul-plagued Lady Cougars dropped a 50-32 decision to a Westover team they had beaten by 57-49 (overtime) and 48-41 scores during the regular season.
Coach Terry Smith’s third-seeded Cougars squandered as much as a 13-point second half lead in bowing 56-52 to a second-seeded Worth County squad that it had lost to 46-43 on the road and defeated 61-59 at home.
The setbacks sent the Crisp cagers to Friday’s consolation contests where the girls beat Dougherty 63-53 and the boys topped Albany High 69-51. All of those teams advanced to the first round of state play next week.
