Tourney, regular season play immediately ahead for area teams

Cordele — Public school basketball teams from Crisp, Dooly and Wilcox counties all will be involved in tournament play between now and the end of the week.

At the private school level, Fullington Academy has one final regular season start on tap for Friday at 6:30 in Pinehurst vs. Georgia Christian. It then launches post season action next week at Crisp Academy.

The Lady Cougars and Cougars both had Region 1-AAAA tourney games on tap today at Monroe High. The former plays Westover’s lady Patriots at 4 while the latter meets Worth County’s boys at 5:30.

Depending upon how the Crisp teams fare, they’ll take the court again on Friday in either the consolation games set for 4 (girls) and 5:30 or title contests on tap at 7 (girls) and 8:30. Both have already earned first-round berths for state play starting next week.

With this past Monday’s ouster of the Lady Patriots, Wilcox High has just one team left in the running for a trip to state. It’s the Patriots who play Lanier County today at 5:30 at Turner County in Ashburn where title tilts only are on tap for Saturday as there are no consolation games.

Dooly County’s Lady Bobcats get their first Region 4-A tourney test at 6 p.m. on Saturday at home against the winner of a Friday game between Schley County and Hawkinsville. That victor gets to play at home again on Monday at 4 vs. Greenville.

The Bobcats, meanwhile, will be idle until 8:30 p.m. Monday when they, too, will be at home against the Schley/Greenville/Brookstone survivor. The winner of that contest plays in Tuesday’s championship contest vs. the Marion/Pacell/Central/Brookstone survivor.
