Crisp Academy begins region tourney play tonight; Crisp County starts state competition this weekend

Cordele — Crisp Academy’s cagers learned for sure Tuesday who they’d be playing when they begin Region 3-A GISA tournament play tonight. Crisp County’s cagers did the same late last night for their state playoff debuts.

Coach Gina Mitchell’s 24-2 Lady Wildcats, who are seeking a fourth straight region and state crown, will host at  7 p.m. Grace Christian’s Lady Cougars who beat Highland 27-23 in a Tuesday play-in game.

Coach George Kennedy’s 13-7 Wildcats, who are seeking the school’s first boys region title since the 2008-09 campaign, also will be going up against Grace Christian. The Cougars earned their berth vs. Crisp by nipping Fullington’s Trojans 54-51 in their Tuesday play-in game.

Two other contests on tap today in the Crisp Academy gym pair  coach Van Bailey’s Fullington Lady Trojans against Georgia Christian at 4 p.m. and the Georgia Christian boys vs. Highland at 5:30.

Today’s losers meet in the 4 (girls) and 5:30 p.m. consolation games. The winners square off at 7 (girls) and 8:30.

While the local private schoolers are at home, its public schoolers go on the road.

Coach Barrett Wilkes’ Lady Cougars (16-11) face on Friday the winner of last night’s game between South Effingham of Guyton and Cross Creek of Augusta. If it’s the latter, game time will be 6 p.m. If it’s the former, no time has been set.

Coach Terry Smith’s Cougars (15-12) will be going up against either Glenn Hills of Augusta or Liberty County of Hinesville at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The only other school with teams still in the running for state honors is Dooly County which just this week won the Region 4-A girls and boys titles.

Coach Cedric Blackshear’s Lady Bobcats (19-6) and coach Towandi King’s Bobcats (23-3) will learn before noon today who as region champs they will get to host next week.
