Coffee brews up contrasting wins over Wilcox

Douglas — Class A Wilcox High suffered a pair of losses that ranged from one extreme to the other when it came calling upon Class AAAAAA Coffee County for Friday night re-matches.

Whereas the visiting Patriots came up short by just two points (65-63) in a nail-biter against the Trojans, the Lady Patriots got bombed 70-5 by the Lady Trojans.

After their home games last night against fellow Region 2-A member Turner County, the Wilcox teams will be in Rochelle again on Tuesday to face Irwin County.

Trojans 65, Patriots 63

In dropping the rubber match of the three-games series they had this season with the Trojans who have handed them both their losses to date, the 8-2 Patriots won the scoring battle in just one of the four quarters.

That edge came in the final period when it drew even at 63 in the waning seconds only to see Coffee’s D.J. Wiley drive the baseline and nail a jump shot. That basket would prove to be the game-winner when Wilcox had the ball stolen as it came back down the floor just before the final buzzer.

“Inconsistency hurt us in this one,” Wilcox coach George Kennedy said afterwards. “What’s confounding to me is that after scoring 25 points in the whole first half, we come back and get 24 in the fourth quarter alone.

“We’re just not doing the things we need to do with any regularity as we’ll come down the court 5-6 straight times and run our offense the way we’re supposed to do and then the very next time put up a 3-point shot we never should have attempted.”

Wilcox’s Jonathan Howard led all scorers in the contest with his season-high 30-point effort. Makail Grace joined him in double digits with 11. Top marksmen for Coffee, which led 15-13, 32-25 and 47-39 at the rest breaks, were Rashad Thomas, 18, Tyree Paulk, 15, and Wiley, 12.

    To hear Crisp Academy coach Tim Harris tell it, though, that was far from being the case for his Wildcats when they defeated Georgia Christian by that count Tuesday.
