Wilcox's Marshall verbally commits to play football at Auburn

Rochelle — Former Wilcox High sports stalwart Nick Marshall is apparently going to get a chance to play his college football in the prestigious Southeastern Conference.

The 6-2, 210-pounder reportedly has given a verbal commitment to Auburn University where he would be one of five quarterbacks in the running for the starting job in the 2012 season. He also had offer from Texas  Indiana, Kansas State and N.C. State.

“He’s listed as an Auburn commitment on a website, but it’s my understanding they (the Tigers) are awaiting his transcript before accepting his commitment,” said Wilcox High coach Mark Ledford who has closely followed Marshall’s career. “Colleges can’t comment on his status until he signs, though.

Marshall initially enrolled at the University of Georgia but in February, 2012, was dismissed from the team by Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

He then enrolled at Garden City (Kans.) Community College where this past season he put up such gaudy numbers as 3,142 yards and 18 touchdowns passing and 1,095 yards and 19 touchdowns rushing. He also threw 20 interceptions.

He was recently named the Kansas Junior College Player of the Year and also was chose most valuable player in this year’s Mississippi Bowl held in Biloxi.

“I feel good about it because now that I have this out of the way, I can focus on my academics,” Marshall said. “I’m glad it’s closer to home, so I know my family can see me play.

“Coach [Gus] Malzahn is a nice guy and recruited me when he was at Arkansas State,” he said.

“And Dameyune Craig, he tried to get me in high school when he was at Florida State. When he came back to Auburn, I felt like that was big and I didn’t want to miss out on playing for him.”
