CORDELE — After two public hearings and a lot of talking on both sides the county commission voted to approve a zoning request for a borrow pit operating in the county. During the last two meetings of the county commission numerous citizens that live in the area the pit is located has expressed their opposition to the change.
Home Equip and Griffin/Folsom had a legal representative speak on their behalf. The borrow pit began in 1993.
The property was apparently rezoned later to add the subdivision whose citizens are in opposition of the change.
The owners of the borrow pit agreed to a 175 ft buffer which is roughly 430% greater than the state requirement. The natural buffers will not be disturbed. The buffer will be adjoining the property of those who objected to the rezoning.
The owners also agreed to give additional land for the cemetery in the area, above what is required. No decendants for those in the cemetery have been located.
Commissioners also approved the rezoning of a 70 acre cotton field from RR (Rural Residential) to I (Industrial) for the purpose of constructing a Peanut Shelling Warhouse/Storage Facility for Georgia Top Choice Peanuts, LLC. The property is located east of 3543 Old Penia Road.
Also on the agenda;
• Sheriff Billy Hancock gave his report to commissioners. Currently the detention center is housing 199 inmates. The department is still meeting required federal standards.  He also turned in a check to the board for over $122,000.
County Administrator Tom Patton informed the commissioners that Hancock donated a bronze cross at the annual Veterans Day Ceremony for the memorial.
Chairman Clark Henderson asked Hancock to extend their thanks to the men and women of the CCSO for their service to Crisp County. Sheriff said his staff is very important and he could not do what he does without them.
• Superior Court Judge Chris Hughes discussed the implementation of Drug Court and how it will benefit the county.
• Commissioners read and approved a proclamation declaring November as Family Connections Community Partnership Month.
