CORDELE — When the dust settled Wednesday at the 2016 Crisp County Farm Bureau Jr. Market Livestock Show, new grand and reserve champions had been named.
Thirty-eight students from FFA and 4-H clubs of Crisp County showed hogs in various weight classes with the hope of winning the top prize and three students competed in the heifer category and one student competed with a steer.
4-H member Rachael Hopper and her Class 4 (270-280 lbs) 1st place hog earned the grand champion title for the event. Hopper then went on to earn 3rd place in Junior Showmanship.
Showing the reserve champion hog was Kayla Stephens, also a member of the Crisp County 4-H. Her hog earned 2nd place in Class 4.
Top winners in each class were as follows:
Class 1 (220-235 lbs): 1st place – Dallas Mathis, 2nd place – Mollie Mathis, 3rd place – Jake Olds, 4th place – Sarah Blackwell, and 5th place Joshua Hauesler.
Class 2 (240-250 lbs): 1st place – Sarah Ashley Stephens, 2nd place – Rilee Duckworth, 3rd place – Landon Taunton, 4th place – Noah Duncan, and 5th place – Allie McPherson.
Class 3 (255-265 lbs): 1st place – Samantha Taunton, 2nd place – Hannah Carroll, 3rd place – Brooke Pate, 4th place – Cara Pheil, and 5th place – Colby Pheil.
Class 4 (270-280 lbs): 1st place – Rachael Hopper, 2nd place- Kayla Stephens, 3rd place – Katelyn Pate, 4th place – Joseph Stokes, and 5th place – Rick Hopper.
Showmanship winners were as follows:
Junior showmanship: 1st place – Brooke Pate, 2nd place – Sara Ashley Stephens, 3rd place – Rachael Hopper.
Senior showmanship: 1st place – Hannah Carroll, 2nd place – Katelyn Pate and 3rd place Haley Pate.
Following a lunch break the show reconvened at 1 p.m with three competitors in the heifer category. Bailey Manning took 1st place in that category followed by Rachael Hopper in 2nd place and Rick Hopper in 3rd.  Maddie Dean was the only participant in the steer category and received Grand Champion for her entry. In beef showmanship Rick Hopper took 1st place and Rachael Hopper earned second.
The Grand Champion Hog weighed 280 lbs. and was purchased by Arabi Feed and Grain. The Reserved Champion Hog weighed in at 275 lbs. and was purchased by Carter Burgers. Serving as judge for the competition was Paul Wigley.
