OCILLA — Dorothy Alton Cumby went to be with her Lord on Saturday, April 30, 2016.
A memorial service celebrating her life was held at the Ocilla United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 3 at 2 p.m. The family received friends beginning at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary.
Dorothy was 93-years old, born August 22, 1922 in Ellenton, Georgia to the late William Dolphus and Nelle Lord Alton. She graduated from Tifton High School in Tifton, Georgia. She was married to Henry Lester Cumby Jr. for 63 years, living most of her married life in Ocilla. During her life, Dorothy worked as an assistant to the pharmacist in Turk’s Pharmacy in Ocilla and was a Licensed Dental Hygienist, who worked with three dentists during her professional career.
Her main interests outside of her work were serving her Lord, her husband and her four children, and later in life her eight grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren. She served her Lord in the United Methodist Church, Ocilla, as a member of the Administrative Board, Church Hostess, President of the Guild, a member of the Choir and in any other capacity she was needed. Dot, as everyone knew her, was a compassionate, loving person who would always be there for anyone in need. She lived the words of her Savior when Jesus said, “in as much as you have ministered to one of the least of these, My children, you have ministered to Me.” One of her favorite ministries was visiting the residents of the Heritage House where she was later a resident.
After her retirement from the Dental Hygienist Profession, Dot loved to spend time in her yard where she worked with her flowers and trees. One of her favorites was a giant eucalyptus that she had planted in retirement. Husband, H.L., was an avid gardener and there was always a good supply of fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers to grace the table.
She is survived by her four children: Linda Cumby Harden (Buddy) of Cordele, Gary Cumby (Jessie) of Broxton, Jimmy Cumby (Angie) of Valdosta, Sherry Cumby Massee (Mark) of Fitzgerald; eight grandchildren: Elizabeth Harden McIntyre (Michael), Hall Harden (Melinda), Luke Massee (Courtney) and Elizabeth Massee Brooks (Chase); fourteen great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Armstrong of Bradenton, Florida as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cumby was preceded in death by her husband, H.L. Cumby; two brothers and two sisters.
