CORDELE — As part of a continued effort to bridge the gap between area youth and law enforcement the Cordele Police Department sponsored a Back to School Bash on Saturday.

The event was held at Crisp Regional Hospital Park. The Cordele Police Department provided and distributed school supplies to area youngsters who will return to school in Crisp County on Friday. Detective Ketorie Sales, who spearheaded the event for the department, said the event was well received.

“This is the second time we have held this event,” said Sales. “We had about 200 kids show up, maybe more. We are hoping to make this an annual event.”

Sales said the event would not have been possible without those that volunteered their time. In addition to the CPD, the Crisp County District Attorney’s Office, Crisp County Housing Authority assisted. Pepsi provided drinks and Harvey’s along with Cobra Exterminating provided food (hot dogs/buns). Sunshine Rhythm was part of the entertainment and Cordele Spacewalk provided inflatables for kids to enjoy. There were other games and activities.

“We really want the young people in our community to know that we are here and we support them,” said Sales. “We want to encourage them to go back into the classroom and do their best and work hard because they are the future of this community.”

Sales said he hopes to work directly with other businesses and organizations that provide school supplies in the hopes of joining together next year for an even bigger event.
