CORDELE — Deputies from Crisp and Dooly Counties were involved in a high-speed chase Monday evening, which resulted in the seizure of multiple guns.

Wednesday, Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock released the following statement on his Facebook page.

“Shortly after 6 pm last night a Crisp County Deputy stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. While talking to the driver the passenger moved into the driver’s seat and fled. A chase ensued at speeds over 100 mph until the driver exited Interstate 75 at exit 122. The driver and another passenger fled on foot. With assistance from Sheriff Craig Peavy and the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office both were located and taken into custody. A search of the vehicle turned up eight handguns and other items from a recent string of car break ins from adjoining states. The weapons were located on the floor in front of both male passengers, after watching the video I am thankful that the two chose a path of flight and not fight. Great job CCSO deputies on the stop, I am thankful you were not harmed. Thank you Sheriff Peavy and your staff for providing quick assistance and being there when the chase came to a sudden stop.”

In a phone interview Wednesday evening Sheriff Hancock said the investigation is ongoing. Hancock said they were expecting law enforcement officers from out of state to determine if any of the guns match those that have been stolen. Sheriff Hancock said that more detailed information is forthcoming.
