VIENNA — A child was rushed to a Macon hospital after being struck by a car as he was heading to the school bus Thursday morning.

At approximately 7:32 a.m. troopers with the Georgia State Patrol Post 30 were dispatched to GA 7 near Lewis Mill Road in regards to an accident. Troopers arrived at the scene where an 8-year old male was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road to board a school bus.

According to reports from the GSP the bus was traveling north on GA 7 and was either stopped or coming to a stop. A while Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 50-year old Jacquelyn Merrell of Pinehurst was traveling south. Merrell stated to troopers that she seen two buses northbound and saw the emergency lights on the second bus as they became activated. Merrell stated that when she looked back at the roadway she saw the child begin to cross and that she braked but was unable to avoid the collision.

GSP investigation into the crash determined the Malibu left 53’2” of skid marks with its left tires and 61’6” with the right tires. Troopers determined that neither, Merrell, or the driver of the school bus were impaired at the time of the collision.

The child was transported by Dooly County EMS to the Macon Medical Center to be treated for his injuries. He was said to have multiple lacerations and complaining of pain in his hip. He was conscious and alert at the time of transport.
