CORDELE — Saturday, a community came together to help one of their own by purchasing baked goods or making donations to assist a local cancer patient. The Crisp County Lions Club sponsored the fundraiser, which was held in front of Harvey’s Supermarket.

Lion Elonia Wolking, who coordinated the event, said they could not have asked for a better day.

“Any time we can come out and offer help to someone who needs it’s a good thing,” said Wolking. “Cancer treatments can be very costly. Then everyday bills pile up on top of that and things can get really tough for a family. I want to say thanks to my fellow Lions that donated their time, baked goods and the cotton candy for the event. I also want to say thank you to everyone else that volunteered or donated. We had a very successful day.”

The bake sale raised $833 for Billy “Poky” Gee, who is currently battling cancer. The money raised was enough to cover the costly co-pay for a needed procedure with enough remaining to help with some other expenses.

Gee’s family said they were very humbled by the outpouring of support from the community. “We not only met our goal but we EXCEEDED it,” said Nikki McVeigh, Gee’s stepdaughter. “We are thankful to the Crisp County Lions Club and to everyone that came out and helped make the fundraiser such a success. What I took away from the day meant more to me than the money that was raised. I am definitely thankful for my family, friends and community. God bless you all.”
