Ruth Reed Cantrell, age 91 of Pitts, Ga., passed away Monday, April 3, 2017 in Cordelia Manor assisted living facility. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, April 8, 2017 in the Pitts Church of God, with visitation one hour before the service from 2:00-3:00 PM. Reverend Danny Rhodes will officiate. Interment will be in the family plot in the Pitts Cemetery.

Miss Ruth was born on October 31, 1925 in Pitts, daughter of the late James Ralph Reed and Pauline Wood Reed. In 1942, she graduated from Pitts High School and married Delma “Dock” E. Cantrell in Vienna, Ga. She was a supervisor with the Georgia Department of Labor from 1957 to 1988. As a life-long member of the Pitts Church of God, Miss Ruth was a devoted Christian, the church pianist, and a student in the Adult Sunday School Classes. She loved gospel music, singing and playing piano for the Gospel Echoes for 31 years (1979-2010) in 13 states. She and Dock also played with the Melody Makers in the 1970’s and the Dixie Rhythm in the 1960’s. Miss Ruth was a wonderful Southern cook and loved to feed family and friends. Food was her love language, with biscuits, fried okra, scuppernong cobbler, pound cake and fudge being her specialties. As a member of Pitts Historical Association, she preserved the history of her community by compiling and publishing the History and Memories of Pitts, Georgia and Communities. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dottie Ann Cantrell McEuen.

Miss Ruth is survived by her husband of 75 years, Delma “Dock” E. Cantrell; son-in-law Emory L. McEuen; granddaughter Holly Cullins and husband Mark Cullins; great-grandsons Eli (11) and Evan (7) Cullins; grandson Glen McEuen and wife Ana McEuen; and great-granddaughters Emory K. (5), Arden (4) and Cora (1) McEuen.

Rather than honoring Miss Ruth with flowers, the family suggests long-lasting honor may be given through contributions in her memory to the Pitts Church of God Benevolent Fund, 141 7^th Ave. W., Pitts, Ga 31072 or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (donate.lls.org). “The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” I Peter 1:24-25 (ESV).
