Crisp Commissioners honor long time teacher

CORDELE — The Crisp County Board of Commissioners began their monthly meeting by commemorating local dance teacher, Kay Williams on Tuesday morning. Williams has been teaching dance in Cordele for the last 35 years. In recognition of her work and dedication, Williams was honored with a plaque to be displayed outside the dance room in the Crisp County Recreation Department.

The Board of Commissioners proclaimed October 23 through 31 to be Red Ribbon Week to help raise awareness of drug abuse. The National Family Partnership, a non-profit organization established in 1980 to help children and families avoid drug abuse, sponsors Red Ribbon Week.

The Board approved expansion plans of the Youth Complex. The expansion will add on a concession stand, bathrooms, soccer field, batting cages, splash pad, playground and more.

According to most recent Youth Ball Complex Phase Two document, two soccer fields totaling 64,800 square feet will be built. In addition, a playground encompassing 2,000 square feet will be built for children aged 2-12.

The Board gave permission to Crisp County Sheriff’s Office to continue pursuing changes in healthcare for inmates in the Crisp County Jail. The new budget needed would be about $260,000 and would cover all medical expenses: mental health, x-rays, blood testing, medications, etc. The only expense not covered would be emergency transport to a hospital.

Sledge-Williams Enterprise Inc. was approved for a Special Use Permit for indoor mini storage warehouses as well as an outside RV and boat storage area at 2334 Ga. Hwy 300 South. The current building has been standing vacant the last three years and Sledge-Williams plans to convert it to climate controlled storage units. The facility will be automated and a concrete path will be added for portable storage.
