uneral services for George T. (Tommy) Mitchell, Jr. will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2017 at Cordele First United Methodist Church with the burial following at Penia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the Mitchell home at 713 East 20th Avenue, Cordele Thursday, December 7, 2017 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tommy was born in Macon and was the son of the late George Thomas Mitchell, Sr. and Marian Faulkner Mitchell. He was a graduate of Cordele High School and received an Associates Degree from Middle Georgia College. He was co-owner of L&M Enterprises and a 70-year member of Cordele First United Methodist Church. He was active in the Wesley Sunday School Class and a member of the Bagdad Club. Tommy was an active member of the Southeastern Pecan Growers Association and the Georgia Pecan Growers Association. He was also a member and past president of the Georgia Watermelon Association and the National Watermelon Association where he served on the Executive Board. Tommy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Cape Mitchell; and their children, Matt and Betsy Mitchell, Mitch and Janice Mitchell, and daughter Marian and Craig Peavy; eight grandchildren, Mallory Edwards and husband, William, Carol Anne Mitchell, Ila Mitchell, Steven Peavy, Sydney Peavy, Ansley Mitchell and Ashden Mitchell; a great-granddaughter, Margaret Ivey Edwards; a brother and his wife, Bobby and Jan Mitchell; and three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Janie Meador, Mary and Melvin Stewart and Mannon and Joe Taunton and numerous nieces and nephews.The family requests that memorials be made to Cordele First United Methodist Church, 302 East 12th Avenue , Cordele, Georgia 31015.  Arrangements are by Rainey Family Funeral Services.
