Crisp Academy picks up wins over Fullington

PINEHURST- The Crisp Academy basketball teams travelled to Pinehurst to take on Fullington Academy on Saturday afternoon. Crisp Academy won both the girls’ and boys’ games.

The Lady Trojans got out to an early 8-3 lead in the first quarter with two three-pointers from Abby Mashburn. A late three-point basket by Maddie Milani helped the Lady Wildcats cut into the Fullington lead. The Lady Trojans led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter.

An Ainslee Forsythe three-pointer with just a few seconds left in the first half helped the Lady Wildcats take a 20-18 lead into the halftime break. Forsythe had six points in the quarter for the Lady Wildcats, as they outscored Fullington 13-7.

Crisp Academy extended the lead in a very defensive third quarter, in which they outscored Fullington 8-5. Claire McGarr scored six of the eight points in the quarter for Crisp Academy, and Maddie Milani added the other two. The Lady Wildcats had the lead 28-23 entering the fourth quarter.

Fullington started the fourth quarter with a 7-2 run, which tied the score at 30 with just over two minutes to play in the game. Claire McGarr scored to give the Lady Wildcats a 32-30 lead with just over a minute left to play. Fullington countered with a bucket to tie the score at 32 with 42 seconds remaining, but Claire McGarr put Crisp Academy back in front 34-32 with eight seconds remaining in the game.

A free throw by Fullington brought the score to 34-33 in favor of the Lady Wildcats with just five seconds left, but Claire McGarr broke free up the floor for an easy layup at the buzzer to put the game away for Crisp Academy. The Lady Wildcats won by a final score of 36-33 to make it two wins in a row after knocking off Terrell Academy on Friday night.

McGarr led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 19 points, and Forsythe finished with six points. Abby Mashburn led the Lady Trojans in scoring with nine points, while Skylar Bailey added eight.

 

Fullington opened the boys’ game on a 6-0 scoring run led by four points from Josh Hendrix. Crisp Academy scored four points in the quarter on two free throws by Bobby Ray Mitchell and a shot by Nathan Willis. The Trojans led 6-4 at the end of a low scoring first quarter.

The Wildcats then outscored Fullington 19-12 in the second quarter. Bobby Ray Mitchell and Ravi Patel each made three-pointers in the quarter to help the Wildcats take the lead, and Trey Williams hit a shot at the buzzer to send Crisp Academy into the halftime break up 23-18. Casey Chancey and Nakita Brown each had five points in the quarter to keep the Trojans within striking distance.

A low scoring third quarter saw the Trojans outscore the Wildcats 9-7. Bobby Ray Mitchell scored all seven points for the Wildcats in the quarter. Casey Chancey led Fullington in the quarter with four points. Crisp Academy held on to a 30-27 lead entering the final quarter.

The Wildcats opened the fourth quarter with a 9-4 scoring run with scores by Bobby Ray Mitchell, Griffin Gravitt and Nathan Willis. A Fullington three-pointer from Nakita Brown brought the score to 39-34 in favor of Crisp Academy with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but the Wildcats were able to put the game away from there to win 48-40.

The leading scorers for the Trojans were Nakita Brown with 16 points, and Casey Chancey with 13. Bobby Ray Mitchell led the Wildcats with 21 points, while Nathan Willis scored 12.

Crisp Academy will play home region games Friday night against Southwest Georgia Academy. The Lady Wildcats will look to extend their winning streak to three games, while the Wildcats hope to add another win to their 6-1 record.
