John Wiggins is officially the new chairman of the Cordele City Commissioners. Wiggins along with Royce Reeves, Sr. and Jeanie Bartee were sworn in last night, January 2, during the Cordele Commissioners meeting.

Before the meeting began, Wiggins had some opening remarks.

“I believe in cooperating and everybody working together to accomplish the same goals. I found out a long time ago, when we separate ourselves, we become very weak. But when we join our forces together, channel all of our resources together, we become strong. That’s what I want the city of Cordele to do. Become strong. I want Cordele to live up to its name, ‘The City of Progress,’” Wiggins said.

The courtroom was packed with members of the community along with family and friends in support of the newly sworn in commissioners.

Right away, Cordele Commissioners moved forward and approved a resolution to declare the recognition and provision of providing firefighters cancer care benefits. The city of Cordele partnered with Georgia Municipal Association (GMA)’s Georgia Interlocal Risk Management Agency (GIRMA) to provide cancer care benefits to Cordele’s firefighters. Wiggins presented the approved resolution to Fire Chief Augustus Telfair.

Cordele Commissioners also approved a request to adopt a Language Access Plan for Activities regarding the 2017 CDBG project. A Language Access Plan is required in order to meet the special needs of language impaired persons.

City of Cordele Commissioners discussed meeting with Crisp County Commissioners more often to work together in an attempt to get more accomplished in the future.

The next Cordele Commissioners meeting will be Tuesday, January 16 at 6:30 p.m. in Cordele City Hall, room #217, located at 501 N. 7th Street.
