Funeral services for James Lewis of Cordele will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2018 in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services. The committal service will follow in Zion Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. James, 94, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.  Born to the late Floyd Jackson Lewis, Sr. and Lydia Arnold Lewis, he was a life-long resident of Cordele. He was a veteran of the United States Army and had served honorably during World War II. James was a farmer and an active member of Cordele First Baptist Church and the Baracca Sunday School Class. He enjoyed fishing but he always remained a lover of the soil, enjoying his gardens with his flowers and vegetables and especially his roses. James is survived by his wife of 70 years, Vernette Sheffield Lewis of Cordele;  two children, a son, Donzel Lewis of Cordele and a daughter and her husband, Karlene and Kent Guilbeau of Austin, TX;  two grandchildren, Alexandra Christine Guilbeau and Lewis Kent Guilbeau, both of Austin, TX; a sister and her husband, Gladys and Calvin Farmer of Cordele; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Clarence Lewis, Clint Lewis, F.J. Lewis, W.H. Lewis, Myrtice White, Elene Johnson Wright, Irene Spence and Susie Whittington. The family ask that memorial donations be left to Zion Hope Cemetery Fund, 608 Antioch Road, Cordele, GA 31015 or to Cordele First Baptist Church, 137 Kelly Road, Cordele, GA 31015.
