Mitchell named Crisp’s Conservationist of the Year

The Middle South Georgia Conservation District is proud to announce Mitchell Farms as the 2019 Conservationist of the Year for Crisp County. Mitchell Farms is a family run business that consists of pecans, timber, cattle and cropland. George T. Mitchell III (Mitch) farmed with his father, George T. Mitchell Jr. for over 40 years.
Mitch participates in the Conservation Stewardship Program through NRCS. He plants legume cover crops in his orchards and establishes pollinator habitats. He also maintains existing field borders and utilizes precision ag technology for fertilizer and nutrient applications. He will soon implement a complete pumping plant evaluation for all his existing pumps, and soil moisture monitoring will also be implemented, monitored and recorded. Mitch is a member of the National Watermelon Association, a member of the Board of Director of the Florida Watermelon Growers Association, and a member of the Georgia Pecan Growers Association.
Conservation Districts are special purpose units of state government that manage local natural resource concerns. Georgia’s 40 Conservation Districts cover every county throughout the state.
