CORDELE — Funeral services for Virginia R. Whelchel, 91, will be at 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8,2019 in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery.

Mrs. Whelchel died Thursday, Sept. 5,2019 at Crisp Regional Hospital. She was born in Wrightsville, Ga. to Emory L. and Mary Hodges Rowland. She is the widow of Alvin C. Whelchel.

She retired from teaching after more than 20 years of service to the students of Crisp County. She taught at Crisp Academy and for the Crisp County Board of Education. She was a member of Cordele First United Methodist Church and the Thalian Club.

She is survived by her children: Al Whelchel of Cordele and Ginger (Chip) Handley of Jacksonville, Fla.; her brother: Hodges Rowland of Wrightsville, Ga.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
