Much to do about Nothing
By Joe Joe Wright
As often as I get up in the morning and go to work I hear everyday, someone did this, someone did that, he said this, she said that. Let’s hang Mark Richt , let’s run everyone up a flag pole. Roll Tide, Obama this, Donald Trump that, does any of this sound familiar to anyone other than me. In my life time I have heard dump trunk loads of negativity about everything from collard greens to nuclear fission. This commissioner did this or said that. The tax commissioner has my taxes to high and the coach doesn’t play my son or daughter, my kid is better than that one. Oh and one of my favorites these are the worst umpires I have ever seen Arghhh!!!!!!! After all the years I have spent in Rec Ball I have heard them last two 1000’s of times. My question is why? Since this is a sports column I will start with Mark Richt. As many may already know I am a die hard Mark Richt fan, notice I didn’t say Georgia fan. I can give dozens of reasons why I am and why others should be a Mark Richt fan but only one reason ever comes up as to why I shouldn’t be. In a nut shell he hasn’t won a National Championship and lately he has lost some big games. That’s it the whole argument from the other side. Well that is a pitiful answer.
Then on a local level I hear moms and dads of 6 year olds and up to 18 year olds say well he or she won’t play mine and I know mine is better. I should be stepping on some toes right now because if your reading this you know whether or not you ever said that or something similar. You are not with your kid 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Coaches job is to play who he thinks is going to give them the best chance to win. Coaches are usually a little more objective in these decisions than a biased parent. Also some kids don’t act right all the time and the reason for lack of playing time can get longer and longer. In the Recreation Department age groups, there are playing time rules, this is understandable you pay to play. In school ball no such rule exist never has never will. Of course the answer to the tax commissioner statement should be self explanatory, i.e. she doesn’t set your taxes just collects them. On the umpire issue most of those complaining DO NOT know what they are talking about, they think they do!! On the Donald I like a lot of what he says but he could easily find a better way of saying it. I am not to fond of a man that makes it a point to put women down in a demeaning manner. The President, oh my! Well suffice to say he doesn’t listen to anyone period. I mean there are people in Washington DC called Generals that know more about warfare than he does and healthcare for that matter. Roll tide, makes me think of the millions of Harvey Updyke type Alabama fans; that there really is in this world. A lot of times when we are talking we should be listening. The grass ain’t always greener, be careful what you ask for, sounds like spoiled grapes to me. If you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.Anyone ever heard them sayings before. If your kid ain’t playing enough then coach a team yourself. If the umpires are that bad then you try it yourself. If the commissioners don’t suit you then run for office yourself. I might add right here that I have the utmost respect for anyone willing to stick their name on a ballot and find out what the people think, to me that takes guts. If Mark Richt is so bad then obviously you don’t remember when Ray Goff was coach at Georgia or Mike Shula at Alabama or Lane Kiffen and Derek Dooley at Tennessee just to name a few. All I am saying here today is that most of the time when people are complaining it is really “ Much to do about Nothing.” I welcome your comments
