The Fullington Academy Trojans opened up their 2016 football season at home with a blowout victory over the Sherwood Christian Academy Eagles on Friday night.
The Trojans were off and running early at the beginning of the first quarter with a quick nine-play drive that ended with a Lane Mitcham touchdown run from seven yards out. The extra point was good and the Trojans were up 7-0 with 8:20 remaining in the first quarter.
Mitcham would again come up with a big play right before the end of the quarter to stop a Sherwood drive as he intercepted a pass, after the two teams traded a couple of defensive stops.
After the interception the Trojans were able to string together a long drive that ended with a 22-yard touchdown run by Will Mashburn. The extra point was missed but the Trojans led 13-0 early in the second quarter.
After another quick defensive stop the Trojans did not take long to extend their lead, as Mitcham was wide open on a screen pass near midfield that he took all the way to the endzone. He would add the two point conversion shortly after, that brought the Fullington lead to 21-0.
The Trojan defense forced another quick Sherwood punt after Blake Shepard sacked the quarterback to bring up a third and long situation and the Trojans cashed in again on a quick scoring drive.
The drive was capped off on a six yard touchdown run by Houston Hawkins that brought the Fullington lead to 28-0 near halftime.
The second half started out no better for Sherwood as they fumbled the opening kickoff, which Fullington recovered.
Fullington continued to pour it on with a quick drive that ended with a Nick Arzola touchdown. The rout was on as the Trojans brought the lead to 35-0.
After another defensive stop the Trojans extended the lead with a Dalton McLeod short touchdown run to bring the score to 41-0 in the middle of the third quarter.
Another Sherwood fumble led to a touchdown by Jake Horne that put the Trojans up by a score of 47-0. McLeod would later add another Touchdown to continue the scoring for Fullington.
They were not quite finished at that point however, as Griffin West was able to intercept a Sherwood pass off of a deflection near midfield and take it all the way for a touchdown. The defensive score put Fullington up 61-0 late in the fourth quarter and that is where it would stand at the end.
Coach Hurst’s players were excited to open up their season with a win and they will be back in action next Friday on the road at Young Americans.
