On August 8, 2018, Walter Lawton Sammons, 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior after an extended illness. He was born October 31, 1932 in Wheeler County, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny Lawton and Viola Clark Sammons, and his eight siblings.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Hester Sammons; son, Randy Sammons of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Lisa Sammons Lovvorn (Ed) of Prattville, AL; and two grandsons, John Lawton Lovvorn (Tammie), of Sacramento, CA, and Rob Lovvorn of Raleigh, NC.

Out of respect for his wishes, there will be a visitation only from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Rainey Family Funeral Services. He said people knew how he lived, thus no formal service was necessary. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the church or charity of your choice. Lawton was a United States Army veteran having served from 1955-1957. He was a retired Baptist Minister of 52 years, serving Macedonia in Telfair County, Penia in Cordele for 32 years, Lakeview in Sumter County, and First Avenue in Rochelle. He was the administrator for Camp Houston for 26 years. He was instrumental in starting the church softball league while at Penia, where he enjoyed playing, coaching, and umpiring. Lawton was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. He truly loved his family, church family, and friends. He enjoyed life, which was evident by some of his favorite scriptures. “I come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10b KJV “ This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 ESV He was a faithful servant. Now he can claim 2 Timothy 4:7 KJV “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Arrangements are by Rainey Family Funeral Services.
