CORDELE— The planning committee for the Cordele Senior Olympics met for a meeting recently to get early preparations going for the second Watermelon Capital Senior Games, scheduled for April 6 of next year.

The Senior Olympics is a way for senior citizens to stay active through friendly athletic competition. Participants ages 50 and up compete in various different athletic events between different age groups with first place medals on the line.

The first ever Watermelon Capital Senior Games took place this past March in Cordele and the committee is looking to make this year’s event much bigger than the previous edition.

The date of the 2019 Games has been set for Saturday, April 6, with the majority of the events scheduled to take place at the Crisp County Recreation Department facilities.

Corn hole, horseshoes, a free throw contest, and various track and field events are just a few of the competitions participants can register to take part in at the 2019 Watermelon Capital Games.

With the event still several months away, many of the details are still to be determined, but those who are interested in learning more about competing or volunteering to help should contact committee chairman Joe Joe Wright at 229-322-6029 or Jimmy Culpepper at 229-365-3107.

The committee will meet again on Thursday, November 29, at 1:15 p.m. at the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce.
