A graveside memorial service for Mildred “Millie” Wade Gainey and Ray Donalson Gainey, both of Cordele, will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, November 30, 2018 at Boston City Cemetery in Boston, GA. The family will receive friends Thursday, November 29 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Rainey Family Funeral Services. Millie, 91, passed away Tuesday, November 20. Ray, 96, passed away Saturday, November 24. They were both born in Boston, GA. Ray the son of the late Noel Erastus Gainey and Allene Langford Gainey, and Millie daughter of the late James Connie Wade and Esther Cobb Wade. Ray served as a bomber pilot during World War II flying 30 combat missions from England over France and Germany. After being released from the United States Army-Air Corp they came to Cordele and built a life together. He was a pharmacist and operated Gainey Drug Store for 47 years. Ray was one of the founding members of the Flint River Boat Club and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He served on the Crisp County School Board for 20 years. Millie was homemaker, Ray’s full partner in life and helped at the drug store. She was involved in Brownies, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts. Millie was a gifted seamstress making tailored garments, including wedding gowns for her family and friends. Her creativity is evident in hand made crewel embroidery chair seats and pillow covers. Ray and Millie both enjoyed gardening and freely shared the bounty of their labor. They are survived by a son, Ray D. Gainey, Jr. of Ball Ground and daughter, Catherine Key and husband, Homer of Talking Rock, GA. and granddaughter Hannah Key of Peachtree City, GA. Millie is also survived by a brother, Oscar T. Cook and wife Margaret Dillon Cook of Boston, GA. and niece, Rachel Cook Beverly and husband, Frank and nephew, Tommy Cook and wife Amy, all of Thomasville. Also niece Val Sewald of Greely, CO. Ray is survived by a sister-in-law, Sara Bagby Gainey, nephew, Dennis Gainey, nieces, Lisa Gainey, Brenda Gainey all of Tallahassee, FL, also niece Pat Ushry Adams, and husband Al, of Warrington, GA. and nephew Ira Ushry and wife Amelia of Columbia, SC. Special long term family friends are Judy Harris and Ronnie and Laura Gray. Special thanks to Ray and Millie’s care giver, Mrs. Sue Barrantes. Arrangements are by Rainey Family Funeral Services.
