Wilcox and Fullington baseball pick up first region wins, CA falls to Terrell

Wilcox defeats Turner for first region win

The Wilcox County High School baseball team collected their first region win of the season on Tuesday evening with a 15-5 run-rule shortened win over the Turner County Rebels.

The Patriots scored in all five innings of play on Tuesday on their way to the victory, with their biggest run scoring output coming from an eight-run second frame.

Wilcox put the first run of the game on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when Clark Gaines hit an RBI single that scored Branson Owens.

Wilcox subsequently took control of the contest with their eight run bottom half of the second.

Brock White scored on a Turner County error for the first run of the second inning, and Rhett Davis later hit an RBI single for the second score. An RBI sacrifice bunt by Cameron Coleman put Wilcox up 4-0, and Owens followed with a three-run home run later on in the frame for a 7-0 lead. Trace Jones hit a two-RBI single that scored White and Desmond Tisdol towards the end of the inning to put Wilcox ahead 9-0 going into the third frame.

Turner put a run on the board in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from Owen Etris, but Wilcox pulled back in front by a score of 10-1 with a run in the bottom half on an RBI hit from White.

The Rebels scored a pair of fourth inning runs to get back to within seven of the Wilcox lead, but the Patriots tacked on four more runs in the bottom half of the frame to go in front by a score of 14-3.

Davis and Cameron Patterson each scored runs on Turner errors during the fourth inning, and Tisdol hit a two-RBI single later on in the frame for the other two scores.

After the Rebels cut the Wilcox lead to 14-5 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, Patterson scored the game-ending run for Wilcox on a fielder’s choice groundout in the bottom half to leave the final score at 15-5 in favor of the Patriots at the conclusion of five innings of play.

Lagan Luke pitched all five innings for the Patriots to pick up the win. He allowed five runs (two earned) on six Rebel hits and three walks while recording six strikeouts in his five innings of work.

Wilcox batting lineup stats from the win:

  1. Davis- one hit, one RBI, and two runs scored
  2. Coleman- two hits, two walks, one RBI, and three runs
  3. Owens- three hits (one home run), four RBIs, and three runs scored
  4. Gaines- two hits and one RBI
  5. Tisdol- one hit, one RBI, one run scored, and one stolen base
  6. White- two hits, one walk, one RBI, and two runs scored
  7. Luke- one walk
  8. Jones- two hits, two RBIs, and one run
  9. Patterson- two hits, two walks, and three runs

The win put the Patriots at 2-5 overall on the season.

Their next game will be on Saturday afternoon at Pelham with first pitch set for 2 p.m.

 

Fullington opens region play with win over Georgia Christian

Fullington Academy’s varsity baseball team picked up their first region win of the season on Tuesday afternoon against the Georgia Christian School Generals by a final score of 4-2.

The Generals scored the first run of the game in the top half of the opening inning and held the 1-0 lead up until the Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the third.

Fullington’s Jack McLeod led off the bottom half of the third frame with a double, and he later made his way to home plate on a two-out RBI hit from Hunter Hughes that tied the score at 1-1.

After a scoreless fourth frame, Fullington took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Chase Smith that sent McLeod to home plate once again.

Georgia Christian tied the score at 2-2 with a run in the top of the sixth, but Fullington responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame and held on from there for the 4-2 win.

Blake Worley and Brooks Hendrix both had RBI hits for the Trojans in the sixth inning to tack on the two runs.

Worley then pitched a scoreless top half of the seventh inning to seal the region victory for the Trojans.

Carson Godfrey pitched five innings and allowed just two unearned runs on three hits and four walks while striking out six Georgia Christian batters in the contest. Worley pitched two scoreless innings in relief and allowed just one General hit while recording two strikeouts.

Fullington’s key contributors in the batting lineup were: McLeod- two hits and two runs scored; Smith and Hughes- two hits and one RBI each; Worely and Brooks Hendrix- one hit and one RBI apiece; Josh Hendrix- one hit and one run scored.

The win put Fullington at 2-5 overall on the season, and 1-0 in region competition.

Fullington is scheduled to play a game this afternoon in Pinehurst against Terrell Academy. The Trojans will play another region game on Tuesday at home against Citizens Christian Academy, also at 4:30.

 

Wildcats drop home region game against Terrell

Crisp Academy fell to region rivals Terrell Academy (6-1) in Cordele on Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 5-0.

The defeat was the second for the Wildcats against the Terrell Eagles so far this season, and it put Crisp at 4-2 on the season, with a 3-2 mark in region play.

The Eagles scored two runs in the top of the first, and three in the top of the third inning to come away with the 5-0 win.

Terrell’s Garrett Sloan pitched six shutout innings and struck out 11 Wildcat batters during the contest.

Will Hubbard, Dylan Farmer, and Spencer Stubbs each recorded one hit for CA in the contest.

Hubbard also pitched four and two thirds shutout innings in the contest after taking the mound in relief of CA starting pitcher Baylor Pless during the top of the third inning.

After Tuesday’s result, the Wildcats are in second place in the GISA region 3-AA standings behind the Terrell Eagles. The two will play one more regular season region matchup at Terrell on April 9.

Crisp will look to get back on track next week when they play a home region game against Windsor Academy on Tuesday afternoon starting at 4:30 p.m.
