UPDATE: Cordele firefighters contain grass fire near Greer St. rail crossing

UPDATE – 3:50 p.m.: Cordele firefighters have contained the fire with fire breaks and prevented the fire from spreading. Light smoke is still in the area, but there is no threat to public safety or property.
Firefighters with the Cordele Fire Rescue Department are currently working to extinguish a grass fire in a field near the railroad tracks that cross Greer St. just south of the intersection with 8th Ave.
A 911 caller reported the fire at approximately 2:20 p.m. The fire is pouring a significant amount of smoke into the area, and drivers should avoid the area if possible.
